Zoran Paunović





Zoran Paunović is Professor of English Literature at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. Main publications: Consumed by Pale Fire (a study of Vladimir Nabokov’s American Novels, 1997); History, Fiction, Myth (Essays on contemporary English and American Literature). His translations include works by James Joyce, Vladimir Nabokov, Julian Barnes and Don DeLillo.

Abstract
On Translatability of James Joyce

The paper deals with certain linguistic and cultural aspects of translating Joyce’s fiction. Since the author has fairly recently produced the first Serbian translation of Ulysses, most of the examples will be taken from that novel, with an attempt at drawing some general conclusions about the main problems in translating Joyce’s works.
